  Ethan's Bio

   Born 1985 in Durham, NH.

Ethan was exposed to art an early age with his mother as an art historian at UNH. Ethan often went to the art department after school to sit in on his  Mom's classes. He also roamed the galleries and art studios amazed at all the creations. One of his favorite things to do was to pick through the throw-away ceramics and take the most magical pieces in the bin.  When Ethan was in 3rd grade, his teacher brought a pottery wheel into the classroom for everyone to throw pots. Even at this early age the pieces he made had a strong connection to him.

IIn high school when Ethan fell in love with Shana, she reintroduced him to clay. He would watch her on her lunch break pinching pots in a sunny patch of dandelions.  His fascination grew as every piece of clay that left Shana's hands seemed more beautiful than the last.  Soon Ethan began working with clay and they spent their time creating art together.

The following summer, Ethan went abroad to Ghana.  Meanwhile, Shana was working at a local pottery studio, delving deeper into the world of pottery-making.  When Ethan returned from Ghana his life was changed.  He saw America for wealth and opportunity but did not want to take part in the status quo.  When Tim and Theresa Christensen-Kirby of Muddy Bird Pottery invited Ethan to the studio he sat down on the wheel to spin a pot.  The energy inside the tiny corridor of a studio, was something Ethan never felt before.  After attempting to make a pot, he knew that this was the life he wanted to lead.

Ethan was a motivated student, stacking up his class schedule in order to graduate a year early.  He was able to fit in some pottery classes, and spent nearly all of his free time throwing pots on the wheel. He  started selling his work during his third and final year of high school and realized he could make a living as a potter.  After Ethan graduated in 2002, he and Shana moved in together and they have been making pottery full-time ever since.
