Outdoor Wood-fired Ovens, workshops available upon request!

Brick and cob (mix of clay, sand, and straw)

Shana has built many wood-fired ovens, including one at The Well School, The Meeting School, and the Norway Hill kids garden.  She has two ovens on site at Rooted in Clay pottery.  She bakes sourdough bread in her wood-fired oven weekly, and loves sharing these skills and baked goods with others!  Shana is available to teach workshops in oven building and help get others started on their own backyard projects.  Please contact her for details, availability, and pricing.

Rooted in Clay Bakery, Mobile trailer oven, 2009

Ethan and Shana built this brick oven on a trailer so they could bake at other locations and events.  The interior of the oven is all firebrick, with a capping of cob.  This oven design allows for a continual fire to burn in a firebox to the side, while pizza bakes on a raised hearth.  Pictured above, the oven is parked at Daloz CSA in Hancock, NH.

This cob oven was built in the summer of 2008 with Kin Schilling and her "Garden Gorillas" group.  The 6-10 year old kids participated in mixing and applying the cob over a period of 6 weeks.  At the end, everyone got to enjoy wood-fired pizza with fresh veggies from the garden on top.

The Well School Ecovillage, Peterborough NH

During the project weeks in May/June 2009, Shana worked with a group of 12 students from The Well School to build this brick/cob oven.  A large flat rock was moved to the site and placed in the ground for the foundation.  The bricks were laid over a wooden arch form, and coated with several inches of cob.
