Shana is an avid gardener and fermentation enthusiast. It is these passions that led her to start making her own fermentation vessels many years ago. Vegetable fermentation is making a come back now, but it is an ancient tradition and historically was done in ceramic vessels. Shana loves to preserve the bountiful local harvest by making all kinds of veggie ferments in the summer and fall to enjoy year round.
Shana makes a variety of unique hand-built sculptural vessels and hanging pieces. These pieces feature ceramic hinges and latches. Shana enjoys the technical challenge of creating these pieces with functional moving parts. These pieces are designed so they can hold a small candle.
Building and wood-firing kilns naturally evolved to building and wood-firing ovens, to bake my own breads and pizzas. Many of the construction and firing techniques are similar. I had most of the materials needed on hand (bricks and scrap clay) and built my first oven after reading Kiko Denzer’s “Build Your Own Earth Oven.” In the past 10 years, I have built over a dozen wood-fired ovens, ranging from small cob ovens, to larger brick interior ovens. Oven sites have included private residences, schools, farms, and a small home bakery.
